“China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” Hong Kong Contest
Nurture local elites in Innovation & Technology sector for motivating Hong Kong to move towards Smart City
4 finalists unveiled for admission to nationwide semi-final competition to compete with elites from across Mainland China

Hong Kong, 22 October 2018 – Development in creative technology has been one of the hottest trends across the globe in recent years, and the Greater Bay Area is growing rapidly under the global wave of innovation. As one of the leading mobile communications service providers, China Mobile Limited (“CHL”) has been organizing the nationwide “China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” since two years ago, with a forward-looking vision to push further development in Innovation & technology. Hong Kong is one of the most notable international innovation cities in the Greater Bay Area, and so the government strongly supports local development of creative technology. In view of this, China Mobile has decided to extend the competition to Hong Kong for the first time.

With the aim of searching out local resources of innovation and technology that strive to lead Hong Kong in becoming an international innovation and technology center, the first ever “China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” Hong Kong Contest is organized by China Mobile Hong Kong (“CMHK”) together with supporting organizations including Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (“HKSTP”), Communications Association of Hong Kong (“CAHK”) and Hong Kong Wireless Technology Industry Association (“WTIA”).

Supporting organizations facilitated in successfully recruiting a group of talented innovation and technology entrepreneurs to participate in the Hong Kong contest. Ten elite teams of entrepreneurs were selected among the participants to join the free training sessions with technical support offered to them along the way, before finals of the Hong Kong contest took place in mid-September. Today, CMHK officially announces the four finalists who will represent Hong Kong as they join the international semi-final competition in Chongqing in October, in which Hong Kong entrepreneurs will compete with IoT experts from across China.

In order to make an official announcement, CMHK hosted the ‘Finalists Award Ceremony’ of “China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” Hong Kong Contest, which took place at Hong Kong Science Park. In addition to the attendance of Mr. Sean Lee, Director & Chief Executive Officer of China Mobile Hong Kong Limited, the event also welcomed Mr. Edward Yau Tang-wah, GBS, JP, Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development and Mr Albert Wong, Chief Executive Officer of Hong Kong Science and Technology Parks Corporation (HKSTP) as officiating guests. And the finalists include Bravolinear Tech, IOTANET, Peacify Limited and Stoneroad IOT (HK) Limited, which will each receive HK$50,000 of Seed Fund.

“China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” Hong Kong Contest is designed to align with the upcoming innovation and technology development of Hong Kong, especially using “Smart City Blueprint” as the main theme to encourage participants to focus on 6 key elements: “Smart Transportation, Smart Living, Smart Environment, Smart Citizen, Smart Government & Smart Finance” for their projects, to contribute to the vision of Hong Kong Smart City by leveraging IoT technology.

CHL has invested significant resources in the application of IoT so as to meet the requirements of innovation and technology development, such as launching the open platform OneNET for managing device and application development, and offering entrepreneurs an excellent ecological environment. To act in concert with a variety of network environments and internet protocols, it supports fast access and big data services for various sensors and smart hardware. It provides rich APIs and application templates to support the development of various industry applications and smart hardware, which not only effectively reduces the cost of IoT application development and deployment, but also greatly reduces the threshold of starting up a business in the innovation and technology sector.

“We are very glad to bring the “China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” to Hong Kong,” said Mr. Sean Lee, Director & Chief Executive Officer of China Mobile Hong Kong Limited. “We hope to leverage on this competition to foster local talents who are interested in joining the innovation and technology field as a career, and thusly need greater room for development. The participants can touch base on the latest technology, and leverage on the exchange opportunity with other talents to broaden their thinking and enhance skillsets for achieving their goals. More importantly, CMHK wishes to take the lead in influencing other enterprises to nurture these talents by providing support to all entrepreneurs. It also hopes to encourage more local youngsters to engage in innovation and technology development.”

Apart from bringing the “China Mobile OneNET Start-ups Marathon Competition” to Hong Kong, CMHK has also invested resources in developing its 5G network to construct a cross-industry 5G social integration innovation ecosystem in response to the government’s promotion of local scientific research. Mr. Sean Li expressed, “Our China Mobile 5G Innovation Center Hong Kong Open Lab has been open since this March to actively initiate the partnership with communications and vertical industry players to lead Hong Kong to becoming a Smart City. For example, our partnering with Sino Group in embedding the latest IoT and big data technology to a number of its properties enhances the efficiency of property management, as well as effectiveness in power saving and developing related applications of Smart City by leveraging with other partnerships (e.g., for smart lamp posts, etc).”

In July of this year, CMHK became Hong Kong’s very first network service provider to successfully achieve end-to-end testing of a 5G network. It also led the way once again in October to become the first mobile communications service provider to use commercial equipment to operate the first 28GHz 5G base station and start field-testing of the 5G network at Science Park. China Mobile Hong Kong wishes to quickly put 5G networks into service when the 5G spectrum is officially released, so that it is first to market in offering users the full 5G experience.
